Wellington Wine, Food & Craft Beer Festival

2016/03/06

The Wellington Wine, Food & Craft Beer Festival was held on the Wellington waterfront, 19th - 20th February 2016 at Waitangi Park.
We attended the Friday night session (based on our experience with Beervana last year) and the theory proved correct. If you want the chance to taste all the offerings you need to go for the first session as these events are very popular and there is always a shortage of the popular items later in the festival.

It is no accident that craft beer was last in the title of this event as it did seem to be an after thought with only 3 vendors, but what they lacked in numbers was made up with quality. The ever reliable Tuatara was backed up by Funk Estate and Good George.

The one thing I noticed (and this was evident in our group) was the number of beer/cider cups being used, it seemed the same amount as those consuming wine. Standing outside the Good George tent may have helped.

Of my group of friends (many not cider drinkers) the Hop Drop and Black Dorris ciders were a favourite followed by their IPA.

Tuatara chose to showcase their Bavarian Hefe, USAPA and my favourite single hop Sauvinova. ‘Don’t Just Open a Beer Open Your Mind’ does seem to sum up their brewing style.

Funk Estate have become another brewery I look out for as their brewing style fits my palate. This year they brought down 2 of my favourites: Yes, Yes Y’all session IPA at 3.5% you can have a few without the usual crafty beer after effects (always good on big days like this!) and Sophistifuffs IPA at 6%. The other end of the scale - but what a great way to finish the night!

The food offering was extensive but we struggled to go past Sushil’s Tasty Manna, his combo platter of Beef Panthras, Chicken Tikka Burrito (I did say he was fusion didn’t I??) and Vege Paneer Croquettes was to die for and filled you up enough to keep going.

Two of our group are Gluten Free and The Crab Shack obliged with what they swore were the best crab taco’s they had ever tasted.

This is most definitely on our list to attend again next year, just hope the weather is as kind.
