Brewfest Out West 2016 (By Jules Gerrard)

2016/03/07

The inaugural Brew Fest in Auckland started in 2014 and with much sadness we said goodbye to this much loved festival as the grounds have just been sold. This small intimate brew fest is perfect for getting together with other like-minded craft beer drinkers. Big enough to have some great variety yet small enough not to have the masses there getting drunk.
2016 Brewfest was smaller than usual due to a few breweries pulling out whether this was due to Gabs coming who knows.

Magic Rock Brewing Co has been imported by Beertique and I must say I was very excited to taste the Salty Kiss Gose Beer. This was outstanding and my beer of the day, salty tart and refreshing so much so this would make a great palate cleanser on a beer degustation menu. However their High Wire Grapefruit IPA whilst solid and fruity is no match for the Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin.

Next up to try was my favourite NZ brewery: Garage Project, now I am such an aficionado of Garage Project that I have drunk nearly all beers they have made. So imagine my surprise when I found a new one White Trash Wheat which I can say got a thumbs up from the entire group.

The Breweries that were represented were Beers without Borders and oh boy they brought a great Coronado selection, Lakeman, Bach Brewing, Funk Estate, 8Wired, Garage Project, Tuatara, Schippers, Liberty and more.

Brew fest 2016 was great and to me perfect training for the ultimate NZ beer festival……….. Beervana.
